Established in 2002 in the heart of Manhattan, Atelier New York has in few years managed to make a reputation in the world of international fashion. Karlo Steel, who founded the Atelier with Constantin von Haeften, explains that their project is the spontaneous evolution of their great passion for fashion into a modern and mature commercial firm. The interior design of the store, realised by Fernando Saintangelo in pure Wiener Werkstatt style, recreates a smart, snug end-of-XX-century living-room where are on display some of the most sophisticated collections of the past few years, and a vintage selection of books about fashion and photography. Carol Christian Poell, Undercover, MA+, Label Under Construction and The Viridi-Anne are only a few brands of men’s clothing and accessories available at the Atelier. “To sell what I like”: that’s what Karlo Steel decided to do when he began an activity that merges an elegant and sober ‘fashion insider’ style with his design background and attracts countless fashion enthusiasts, pundits and celebrities. Although the store’s proposals are mainly for men, the non-gender connotation of some of them and the choice of accessories for sale have appealed also to a number of ladies. At its fifth anniversary, the store is going to move to new premises located in the Hudson Square area (north of Tribeca), and the new space, about three times larger than the present one, will enable the Atelier to host events and parties, and to enrich its exclusive selections with women’s accessories.
