L’artista è famosa per la sua raccolta di uccellini di squisita concezione e fattura, ciascuno dei quali ‘canta’- per così dire – con una sua vibrante personalità dovuta in gran parte alla cura scrupolosa con cui Ann Wood ha costruito ciascun pezzo dagli scarti di tessuto che ha trovato. La maggior parte dei tessuti vintage usati dalla Wood porta con sé il sapore del passato e il ricordo della persona a cui il tessuto è appartenuto un tempo, e questa sensazione di storia personale è di importanza basilare per l’artista, la quale afferma: “Provo una sorta di affetto e tenerezza nel rimettere in uso e ridare scopo a cose che sono state in passato oggetti personali gelosamente conservati”. L’esperienza professionale della Wood nel design, nella attrezzistica di scena per gli spot televisivi e per i film, l’ha preparata alla scelta della sua carriera che consiste nel fare opere d’arte uniche, quantunque i suoi lavori siano passati da dimensioni superiori al naturale alla miniatura. Ann Wood considera i suoi uccellini cuciti a mano come attori in un mondo teatrale miniaturizzato, un mondo in cui figurano anche le favolose barche di cartapesta con vele rigonfie in tessuto di cotone a quadretti, che costituiscono un altro elemento del suo repertorio artistico.
L’artista deve gran parte della sua ispirazione alla sua eterna infatuazione per “…le cose piccole e complesse, per la miniaturizzazione…per le cose perdute o abbandonate…l’allestimento di un minuscolo palcoscenico.” E’ in questo personalissimo mondo che Ann Wood attrae il suo pubblico, affascinandolo con creazioni uniche dotate al tempo stesso di ispirazione e compiutezza.
The creative genesis of the work of Brooklyn, New York based artist Ann Wood finds its inspiration in antique and vintage textiles. Wood is most well-known for her collection of small, exquisitely designed birds, each of which sings with its own vibrant personality due in large part to the exacting care taken by Wood, who hand crafts each piece from discarded and found cloth. Most of the vintage materials used by Wood carries with it a sense of the past, a memory of the person to whom the cloth once belonged–this essence of personal history is of key importance to Wood, who says, “For me there is a kind of affection and tenderness in the re-use and re-purposing of things that were once personal and perhaps treasured possessions.” Wood’s professional background in set and prop design for television commercials and films has readied her for her chosen career in making one-of-a-kind artworks, however the scale of her work has gone from larger-than-life-sized to miniature. Wood views her hand-stitched birds as players in a miniaturized theatrical world, a world also occupied by the fabulous papier-mâché boats with billowing, gingham sails which form another part of her artistic repetoire. Wood owes much of her inspiration to a life-long infatuation with “…smallness, intricacies, miniaturization…lost or abandoned things…the setting of a tiny stage.” It is in this highly personalized world that Ann Wood draws her audience and dazzles them with her one-of-a-kind creations that are as inspired as they are accomplished.
