Dover Street Market
Nel settembre del 2004 a Mayfair, nel centro di Londra, ha aperto un nuovo spazio-vendita particolare. L’idea che ne sta alla base è il bisogno, espresso da Rei Kawakubo, di “creare una sorta di mercato in cui artisti e stilisti di vari settori si riuniscano e s’incontrino in una atmosfera continua di bellezza e caos, che veda trovarsi e mescolarsi spiriti affini, animati ciascuno da forti concezioni personali.
Nei 1200 metri quadri su sei piani Rei ha trovato una tela bianca sulla quale dar vita a un quadro contrastante, pieno di confusione ed energia, in cui il concetto tradizionale di mercatino viene superato dalla sua concezione di sinergia accidentale. La principale ispirazione per questo spazio è venuta a Rei Kawakubo in occasione delle sua molte visite al mercato londinese di Kensington, che ha goduto di grande popolarità dagli anni ’70 fino alla sua chiusura avvenuta alcuni anni fa.
Londra primeggiava quanto alla scelta di luoghi perfetti per esprimere la sua energia e spirito creativo.
Come in qualunque altro comune mercato una delle prime emozioni che si provano entrando nel Dover Street Market è la curiosità che ci spinge a esplorare e studiare tutto ciò che vi si esibisce. Circa la metà dello spazio-vendita è occupato da collezioni vecchie e nuove di Comme des Garçons, ma sono anche disponibili prodotto di vari altri designers. La collezione in edizione limitata di mobili fatti di materiale epossidico color ebano o nero metallico di Hedi Slimane, lo stilista della linea uomo Dior, si trova esclusivamente al Dover Street Market. L’artista Jan De Cock ha collaborato nella creazione di una stupefacente scultura-istallazione per il padiglione di Raf Simons, composta da centinaia di scatole. Gli oggetti stupenti e insoliti raccolti da Emma Hawkins sono in mostra in tutto lo spazio-mercato. Si possono trovare in vendita antichità raccolte qua e là, animali impagliati, teschi da tutti il mondo.
In September 2004 a new and special retail space opened in Mayfair, in the centre of London. The concept behind everything is the need, expressed by Rei Kawakubo to “create a kind of market where artists and designers from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos, the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision.”
With 1200 square metres over six floors, Rei had a completely blank canvas in which to showcase a clashing, confusing, energetic environment where the traditional concept of a retail “corner” is broken down by her vision of synergy.
The limited edition collection of furniture made from ebony and black metal epoxy by Dior`s menswear designer Hedi Slimane, is available exclusively in DSM. Artist Jan De Cock collaborated in the creation of a stunning sculpture/installation for the stall of Raf Simons, composed by hundreds of boxes. The weird and wonderful objects collected by Emma Hawkins, are displayed all over the shop. You can find hand picked antiques, stuffed animals, skulls from around the world all for purchase.
“Attracting all sorts of customers, from various backgrounds, age and profession… the first few months have been going very well” says Annika Mc Veigh, spokesperson for Comme des Garcons.
When asked about long term plans for the future and whether there will be a rotation of labels or if they will stick to the designers first invited she said:” We operate very much on a case by case basis, if both parties are happy with the agreement and the circumstances are right we continue! But of course we look to find new projects too… It`s a market, so we are free in many ways to make changes or organise projects.” With no plans to open other “Markets” in different cities, the Dover Street Market is a one off unique shopping experience, and an essential on your “to do” list on a visit to London. After all , what other shop in London offers the chance for you to buy a tshirt from a vending machine, or to have a slice of cake from an Organic Bakery one minute and be browsing some of the finest Parisian haute couture by Azzedine Alaia a few moments later.
