The Preppy Lifestyle – Introduction

L’origine del termine “preppy“ è da ricondurre alla tipologia di istituti scolastici privati – le Preparatory School – che i giovani facoltosi statunitensi frequentavano negli anni 50 in preparazione al college. Quali rampolli delle ricche famiglie tradizionaliste della East Coast, i preppies sono storicamente e stilisticamente figli dei Trad – abbreviazione di Traditionalist – che a loro volta hanno frequentato gli stessi istituti e gli stessi college negli Anni ‘30. Questo senso della tradizione e dell’elitarismo, abbinato al valore dell’impegno e della competizione, caratterizzano la vita di questi giovani che vivono un età dorata nell’America vincitrice della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, lontani dagli sconvolgimenti che negli anni 60 incendieranno gli Stati Uniti e il mondo intero. Ben educati e colti, attenti alle etichette e costantemente impegnati tra studio, sport e attività ricreative, i preppies vivono la loro gioventù con un misto di rispetto e ribellione: fedeli alle regole e ai valori trasmessi dalla famiglia, trovano nei campus delle Prep School la possibilità di dar sfogo alla propria ribellione creativa inventando un abbigliamento e uno stile caratterizzato da pochi capi classici rivisitati negli accostamenti e soprattutto nei colori.
Abituati fin da piccoli ad indossare mocassini, giacca e cravatta oltre alle divise delle scuole dove si trasferiscono già a 15 anni, i preppies modificano l’abbigliamento quotidiano “educato”, classico-sportivo reinterpretandolo secondo colori gioiosi e solari e abbinamenti inaspettati: mocassini portati senza calzini, pantaloni classici di cotone reinterpretati in colori acidi modello go to hell, bermuda e shorts portati con la giacca di tweed, camicie button down color pastello o in seersucker, cravatte regimental e bow ties in tessuto madras, felpe e cardigan letterman che riproducono i nomi delle scuole e gli stemmi storici. Silenziosi, questi giovani trovano il loro modo di ribellarsi alle regole, assecondandole e inventando i presupposti dello stile classico-sportivo internazionale.

The origin of the term “preppy” is to be traced to the private schools – Preparatory Schools – that well-off American young people attended in the Fifties to prepare for college. Born of rich traditionalist families in the East Coast, preppies, both for their history and style, stem from Trads (the abbreviated form for Traditionalists) who attended the same schools and colleges in the Thirties. A sense of belonging to a tradition and an élite, combined with the importance attached to commitment and competition, characterised the life of these students who lived their golden youth in post war America, far from the turmoil that was to shake the USA and the whole world in the Sixties. Well bred and educated, preppies were deferential to etiquette, devoted their time to study, sport and leisure, and lived their youth with a mixture of respect and rebelliousness: loyal to family rules and values, they found in Prep Schools’ campuses the possibility to give vent to their creative unconventionality and invented a style in clothing by re-editing a few classic items in renewed matches and colours.

Used since their childhood to wearing moccasins and a jacket and tie, besides the uniforms of the schools where they moved at the age of fifteen, preppies modified the ‘correct’ classic sportive clothing of everyday by re-proposing it in warm joyful colours and unexpected matches: moccasins worn without socks, classic cotton pants proposed in go-to-hell acid hues, bermuda shorts worn with a tweed jacket, pastel or seersucker button-down shirts, regimental ties and bow ties in madras fabric, sweatshirts and letterman cardigans bearing the schools’ names and historic badges. These young people silently found a way of their own to rebel against rules by paradoxically complying with them and creating the preconditions for an international classic sports style in clothing.

In una quotidianità dorata e preordinata, i preppies si muovono con disinvoltura in ambienti ricchi di stimoli e storia, cercando il contatto con la natura e sviluppando uno stile di vita dinamico e giovanile. Pur fortemente impegnati negli studi, vengono incoraggiati dall’ambiente e dalle famiglie a cercare il successo anche nello sport e nelle relazioni sociali. Dalle aule scolastiche e universitarie alle attività come ex- alumni, i preppies animano il network degli Old Boys, i compagni di campus, sapendo che sarà per loro prezioso per tutta la vita. Le relazioni vengono mantenute anche durante i week-end al mare tra New York e Boston o d’inverno nel New England ricco di boschi, laghi e fiumi: le grandi case bianche dipinte da Hopper, le barche a vela nella baia di Cape Cod, i lodge del Connecticut sono gli scenari in cui si muovono da generazioni. Riti e tradizioni, comunità familiare e vita attiva all’aria aperta sono le costanti del tempo libero dei preppies: prezioso e agognato, serve a controbilanciare lo stress e la competizione della vita cittadina.

In their daily golden, pre-arranged life, preppies confidently move in stimulating milieus rich in history, but at the same time they strive after nature and develop a dynamic and youthful lifestyle. Although they study very hard, they are spurred by their milieu and families to achieve success also in sports activities and social relationships. From school and university rooms to their activities as former students, preppies give life to a network of ex fellow students, the Old Boys, and develop relationships that will be precious for the rest of their lives. Relationships are maintained also during the weekends at the seaside between New York and Boston, or in winter in the whole of New England with its wealth of woods, lakes and rivers. The imposing white houses painted by Hopper, the sailboats in Cape Cod bay, the lodges in Connecticut have been their favourite background for generations. Rites and traditions, the family, activities in the open air are the main ingredients of preppies’ leisure: something precious they long for to counterbalance the stressful competition of city life.
