The Preppy Lifestyle: The Polo Shirts

Nata nel 1933, la polo Lacoste, masterpiece dello stile preppy, fonda il suo successo su valori di autenticità, prestazioni ed eleganza. Legata profondamente alle proprie radici sportive, simbolo di un look da tempo libero, confortevole e rilassato, Lacoste ha saputo reinventarsi negli anni con proposte di colori sempre nuove, una comunicazione efficace, l’ampliamento del suo portafoglio prodotti e innovative versioni delle polo in limited edition. Sono moltissimi gli sport praticati dai giovani preppy, principalmente all’aria aperto. Uno su tutti il tennis, tradizionalmente attività ricreativa d’élite. Il marchio francese approda negli States nei primi anni ’70 e raggiunge la sua popolarità tra gli studenti universitari dell’Ivy League agli inizi degli anni ’80. Sarà proprio The Official Preppy Handbook di Lisa Birnbach (1980) a consacrare l’ingresso della polo Lacoste nel guardaroba preppy, inizialmente nella versione bianca e successivamente nelle varianti colore più accese. Caratteristici il colletto e il bordo manica rigati, i due bottoni, la vestibilità regolare fedele ai primi modelli, leggermente più corti delle polo contemporanee. Nel tempo Lacoste ha introdotto un fitting più asciutto e cotoni stretch. Nell’armadio del vero preppy non possono inoltre mancare i modelli a righe orizzontali, in bianco-navy, rosso-navy e giallo-bianco.

First manufactured in 1933, the Lacoste polo shirt is an outstanding example of the preppy style and owes its success to its elegance, authenticity and performances. Deeply rooted in a sports lifestyle, the symbol of a comfortable, relaxed, leisure look, Lacoste has been able to renew itself over the years through effective communication, by proposing ever new hues, enriching the range of its products and offering innovative versions of its polo shirts in limited edition. Young preppies practise countless sports, mainly outdoors, and tennis, a traditionally elitist leisure activity, is among their favourite ones. The French brand made its appearance in the USA in the early Seventies and reached the peak of popularity with the Ivy League university students in the early Eighties; it was precisely Lisa Birnbach’s The Official Preppy Handbook (1980) that officially included the Lacoste polo shirt in the preppy wardrobe, starting from the version in white followed by other models in bright colours. The shirt’s features include: the ribbed sleeve and collar, the two buttons and a regular fit, true to the early models that were slightly shorter than those of today. Over the years Lacoste has introduced a slimmer fit and stretch cotton. Unfailing in a true preppy wardrobe are also the horizontal striped models in navy-white, navy-red and yellow-white.
