Two of the Best Architecture
Heatherwick Studio, per loro stessa definizione, esiste per portare alla luce progetti straordinari. Fondato da Thomas Heatherwick, nel 1994, lo Studio si occupa di architettura, infrastrutture urbane, scultura, design di mobili e strategic planning. Negli ultimi mesi, del loro padiglione per la Shanghai Expo 2010, se ne è parlato in tutte le riviste specializzate. La “Cattedrale dei Semi”, è un edificio alto 20 metri, composto da 60.000 tubi trasparenti della lunghezza di 7.5m l’uno, ciascuno dei quali contiene incastonato in un’estremità, un seme, parte di una collezione proveniente dai Royal Botanical Gardens di Kew. Senza dubbi una delle opere più geniali è il Rolling Bridge (Ponte che si arrotola), un ponte pedonale che si trova a ridosso di un canale nella zona di Paddington. Il Rolling Bridge da ponte diritto, si arrotola lentamente su se stesso formando una struttura circolare. Lo Studio si è occupato della progettazione di un Velodromo per le Olimpiadi del 2012 di Londra, che una volta ultimato, sarà semplicemente mozzafiato.
As they claim, Heatherwick Studio exists to make extraordinary projects happen. Established by Thomas Heatherwick in 1994, it is recognised for its work in: architecture, urban infrastructure, sculpture, furniture design and strategic thinking. In the past few months their UK Pavilion for the Shanghai 2010 Expo, has been all over the press. “Seed Cathedral”, a 20-metre high building, constructed from 60,000 transparent 7.5-metre long optical strands, each of which has embedded within its tip a seed, part of a collection of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. One of the most clever creations is their Rolling Bridge, a pedestrian bridge on a canal in the Paddington area. Rolling Bridge opens by slowly and smoothly curling until it transforms from a conventional, straight bridge, into a circular sculpture which sits on the bank of the canal. The Studio is also involved with the 2012 London Olympics, creating what would be the most amazing Velopark ever seen.
HawkinsBrown è uno studio di architettura guidato da Roger Hawkins, Russell Brown e David Bickle. Da ventun’anni fa parte di quell’ avanguardia Britannica, producendo edifici di altissima qualita per un ampia gamma di clienti. Uno dei progetti che l’ufficio ha in corso è Tottenham Court Road Station Plaza, Londra. Si tratta di una riprogettazione del Plaza Centre di St Giles Circus, ora un centro nevralgico sempre congestionato, cercando di trasformare la Piazza in una “lobby”, punto di incontro e scambio per Londra. Il loro ultimo progetto è il restauro dell’edifico Art Deco che ospita il Municipio di Stoke Newington, nel quartiere di Hackney, il quale è stato ristrutturato conservando le sue caratteristiche originali ma con l’idea di provvedere spazi flessibili per la comunità. Grandi Aziende come la Red Bull stanno utilizzando spazi creati dallo Studio. In questo caso mi riferisco all’edificio The Terrace che si trova a Tooley Street, una combinazione di nuovi elementi con altri solamente modificati, che creano un ambiente interessante e nuovo rispetto ai moderni edifici circostanti.
HawkinsBrown is an architectural practice led by directors Roger Hawkins, Russell Brown and David Bickle. It has been at the forefront of British architecture for twenty-one years, producing buildings of consistently high quality for a wide variety of clients. One of the studio’s ongoing projects is Tottenham Court Road Station Plaza, London. It is a redesign of the Centre Plaza at St Giles Circus that explores the notion of the Plaza being the ‘lobby for London’, a hub in this congested part of the city. Their latest project in the Borough of Hackney is the restoration of the historic Art Deco Building which houses Stoke Newington Town Hall. It has been refurbished to preserve its original features whilst providing flexible spaces for the community. Huge brands such as Red Bull are now occupying another one of their developments, The Terrace in Tooley Street, which is a combination of renovation and new build elements, giving a very interesting edge and colourful mix to the mostly modern surrounding areas.
