LABEL UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Tapestry, in its essence, is bound to the simplicity of its geometry: the perpendicular crossing of warp and weft. This orthogonal structure not only defines the tapestry’s physical form but also governs its capacity to create meaning and imagery. However, in the hands of contemporary artist Luca Laurini, the rigid traditions of tapestry take on an entirely new dimension. Laurini’s “knitapastry,” as he defines it, disrupts the conventional geometry of weaving to explore the indeterminate and immeasurable. His compositions break away from representational constraints, yet paradoxically evoke the universe.
This artistic divergence stems from Laurini’s collaboration with Alessandro Tinelli, whose photographic techniques produce striking, otherworldly images. Tinelli creates these visuals by using fungal spores on chemically treated film, capturing the ethereal filaments, spirals, and transitions of light and shadow in stunning detail. These spore-based patterns, true microcosms of germination and decay, bear a startling resemblance to the macrocosms of deep space.
The swirling darkness and silent expanses of Tinelli’s images echo the inaccessibility of the universe, resembling photographs of galaxies and nebulae. Laurini integrates these impressions into his tapestries, creating a dichotomy where the tapestry’s traditional function based on order and structure gives way to chaos and boundlessness. Through this synthesis, Laurini’s art reminds us that the structure of a tapestry, like the vast fabric of space and time, can be a means to create order while also embracing the infinite unknown.
